Hopefully this can be useful to you. I wrote this years ago with the intention of posting it on Literotica, but it had gotten sidelined. So now this will be a Substack exclusive.

Since it was written years ago, some of my views have changed and/or evolved. That will be reflected in upcoming posts here. But there’s a lot of great advice here that I’m excited to share with you.

This was written with erotica in mind, so the examples are sex related.

It was also written to be a fun read, which frankly, is surprising to me now that I’ve looked it over.

be well,

Tip #1:  Read and Write.  Write and Read.

A)  Reading

There’s a saying that if you want to become a better writer, you should read more.

Truer advice has never been given.  I wholehearted agree with this notion.

If you want to improve the quality of your writing, or learn how to write in general, then read tons of stuff.  Find an author you like.  Then read the hell out of it.  Personally, in the non-erotic world, I love Anne Rice, Taylor Jenkins Reid, and Simon Kernick novels.  I can’t get enough of his crime thrillers.

How does reading help your writing?  Because when you read, you subconsciously learn how the pros do it.  You learn new sentence structures.  New ways of descriptions.  New ways of advancing a story.  How to write dialogue.  Etc…  You learn the whole gambit of writing by seeing how the pros do it.  It really opens your mind if you read with an open mind.

Then when you write something, you have that arsenal of techniques, phrases, key words, sentence structures, and descriptions in the back of your mind, ready for use.

B) Writing

I’ll admit, when I first started writing erotic stories, it was strange.  Because, come on, it’s sex.  But I quickly found that it became easier.  The whole process became easier.  So it goes without saying that the more you write, the better you’ll be at it.  That’s a commonly used saying because it’s true.

But more on writing later…
